Seeding on the Peninsula
Hydroseeding in Belmont happens on a peninsula. The city sits between the Catawba River and its tributary, the South Fork Catawba River, and the two rivers form arms of Lake Wylie on either side. Water is never far away, and so much of Belmont slopes toward one shore or the other that keeping soil on the lot is a constant concern during building and landscaping.
Several small watersheds
Belmont does not drain in one direction. Areas west of downtown drain to the South Fork Catawba. The east side north of the railroad is in the Catawba Heights watershed, and land south of town drains to Paw Creek. On a construction site, we figure out which way the water leaves the lot and put silt fence and inlet protection where they will do the most good.
From mill village to new subdivision
Belmont had nearly twenty mills by 1930. Most textile work has since moved overseas, and many former mill sites have been converted to housing or other uses. Old mill houses have been torn down to make way for new developments. Lots like these often have buried debris, old foundations and very little topsoil, so grading and soil prep come before seed.
Growth since 2010
Belmont grew 49 percent between 2010 and 2020, from 10,076 to 15,010 people. That pace means a steady stream of builder lots, townhome common areas and small commercial pads, all of which need permanent cover when construction wraps up.
Slopes toward the water
Banks that face either river arm get our most careful treatment. We use erosion control blankets on the steeper sections and a heavy hydromulch elsewhere. Where a homeowner wants a lower-maintenance look on a slope, we can seed a mix that does not need regular mowing.

Belmont Questions
Our new home is on a former mill lot. Will grass grow there?
Yes, once the ground is prepared. These lots often need debris removed, topsoil added and fine grading before seeding.
Which way does my lot drain?
Belmont has several small watersheds. We check the slope and nearby drains on the site visit and place sediment control accordingly.
Can you seed a slope that faces the river?
Yes. Steeper banks get erosion control blankets and gentler ones get hydromulch with tackifier.
Do you work on townhome common areas?
Yes. Shared lawns, detention areas and slopes in townhome communities are a good fit for hydroseeding.
