Lawns in a Town That Grew Up Fast

Hydroseeding in Matthews is often about starting over on a lawn that has been there for decades. Matthews went from 1,648 residents in 1980 to 13,651 in 1990, a jump of more than 700 percent in ten years. A large share of the town's yards were seeded or sodded during that boom, and many of those lawns are now thin, patchy and full of weeds. Hydroseeding a renovated yard is one of the most cost-effective ways to bring them back.

A ridge that splits the water

The center of town sits on a ridge. Water on the north side drains toward McAlpine Creek, and water on the south side heads to Fourmile Creek, a McAlpine tributary. On a lot near that ridge line, runoff can leave the yard in two directions. We look at which way each part of the yard drains before deciding where a swale needs a blanket and where hydromulch alone will hold.

Ground cleared long ago

In the early 1800s the settlement here was nicknamed Stumptown for all the stumps left from clearing land for cotton fields. Ground that has been farmed and then built on often has very little topsoil left over the clay. When we renovate a lawn in town, we test the soil and plan on adding topsoil or compost where the surface is mostly subsoil.

How a renovation works

Most Matthews renovations follow the same order: kill off the weeds and worn-out turf, core aerate or till, correct low spots with a little yard grading, then hydroseed with a mix suited to the shade and sun on that lot. For lawns that are thin but not dead, overseeding with hydroseed slurry is a lighter option.

Commercial pads near the interstate

Interstate 485 crosses the southern part of town with four interchanges, and U.S. 74 runs through the middle. Pad sites and road shoulders along those corridors need commercial hydroseeding and silt fence during construction, and we handle that work too.

Matthews Questions

My lawn went in around 1990. Is it worth renovating instead of patching?

When weeds and bare dirt cover over half the lawn, starting over with hydroseed usually beats patching. We can tell you which one makes sense after looking at it.

Can you overseed without tearing out the whole lawn?

Yes. We aerate and spray seed into the existing turf. It works well for thin fescue lawns in early fall.

Why does my yard stay soggy on one side?

On ridge-side lots, water often collects where two drainage directions meet. Light regrading or a shallow swale usually fixes it before we seed.

Do you seed along commercial frontage on U.S. 74?

Yes, including slopes and shoulders on pad sites, with silt fence and inlet protection while the grass establishes.
