Clearing Woods for Lawns
Hydroseeding in Waxhaw usually follows land clearing. Waxhaw is described as a wooded area with rolling hills, and the town more than doubled in a decade, from 9,859 people in 2010 to 20,534 in 2020. New homes have gone up along NC 75 east and west of town and along NC 16, Providence Road, to the north. Many of those lots were woods or fields a few years ago.
What cleared land leaves behind
After trees come out, a lot is left with stumps, roots, uneven ground and a thin forest-floor layer over clay. Equipment packs the surface. Before we seed, the lot needs stump and root removal, rough grading, topsoil where the clay is bare and a fine grade. Hydroseeding then puts seed, fertilizer and mulch down together across the whole yard in one pass.
Rolling ground and runoff
On rolling lots, water picks up speed as it runs toward the low side. Swales and the downhill edge of a new yard are where erosion starts. We put erosion control blankets in swales, use heavier hydromulch on slopes and keep silt fence at the low edge until the grass is established.
A park built for soil conservation
Cane Creek Park, a 1,050-acre park south of Waxhaw on Harkey Road, was a cooperative project of Union County, the Union Conservation District and the Soil Conservation Service. That connection to soil conservation fits the area: rolling farm and forest ground that erodes quickly when bare.
Mining and farming past
The Howie Gold Mine, near the town limits, produced 50,000 ounces of gold by 1935. Early settlers farmed the area, and the railroad reached Waxhaw in 1888. Land that has been mined, farmed and logged often has uneven soil quality, so we test before we seed.

Waxhaw Questions
We just cleared a wooded lot. How soon can you seed?
Once stumps and roots are out and the lot is graded. Seeding right after grading keeps the soil from washing.
Does a cleared lot need topsoil?
Usually some. Clearing often leaves a thin organic layer over clay that is too thin to support a lawn by itself.
Where does erosion start on rolling lots?
In swales and on the downhill edge. We protect those spots with blankets and silt fence.
Can you seed a large lot along Providence Road?
Yes. Larger lots are well suited to hydroseeding because a truck can cover a lot of ground quickly.
