Lakefront Yards Need a Different Approach

Hydroseeding in Cornelius often means working on a yard that falls toward Lake Norman. The western side of town drains to the lake, and the shoreline is lined with homes. Studies of the lake point to dense residential development close to the shoreline as the main cause of erosion, with stormwater runoff a major contributor. A good stand of grass on the upper yard is one of the simplest ways to slow that runoff down.

Shoreline buffers

A 2001 North Carolina rule requires a 50-foot vegetated buffer along Lake Norman for new housing, with older neighborhoods held to a 30-foot buffer. That means the strip nearest the water usually stays vegetated, and lawn work happens above it. We seed and stabilize the yard upslope of the buffer and keep disturbed soil from moving into it.

Steep yards and blankets

Many Cornelius lots drop quickly toward the water. On those slopes, seed alone tends to slide in the first heavy rain. We use erosion control blankets on the steepest faces and bonded fiber matrix on banks where blankets are hard to pin. Hydromulch with tackifier covers the flatter parts of the yard.

The east side of town

Not every lot faces the lake. The eastern side of Cornelius drains toward the Rocky River, a southeast-flowing tributary of the Pee Dee. Yards there are more typical suburban lots, and they get standard lawn hydroseeding and silt fence when they are built or renovated.

A town that grew in a hurry

Cornelius grew from 2,581 people in 1990 to 11,969 in 2000, an increase of about 364 percent. Many lawns from that era have since been through drought, shade from maturing trees and heavy foot traffic. Renovation and overseeding are common requests.

Cornelius Questions

Can you seed all the way down to the lake?

The strip nearest the water usually falls under a vegetated buffer rule. We focus on the yard above it and keep our work from disturbing the buffer.

My lakefront yard is too steep to mow. What works?

Blankets or bonded fiber matrix with a low-maintenance mix. Some owners choose a no-mow grass or groundcover blend on the steepest part.

Will hydroseed wash into the lake?

Tackifier binds the mulch and seed to the soil, and on steep slopes we add blankets. Silt fence at the bottom of the work area catches anything that moves.

Do you work on rebuilt lake homes?

Yes. After a teardown and rebuild, the yard usually needs grading, topsoil and seed all at once.
