Seeding Acreage on Mint Hill's Ridge

Hydroseeding in Mint Hill tends to cover more ground than a typical suburban job. Mint Hill spreads over about 24.8 square miles with roughly 1,076 people per square mile in 2020, which leaves a lot of room for bigger lots, horse pastures and wooded parcels being turned into homesites. A hydroseed truck can cover an acre or more in a single visit, which is where it beats sod and hand seeding by the widest margin.

Sitting on the divide

The center of Mint Hill sits on a ridge. Rain that falls on the west side drains toward McAlpine Creek and the Catawba River. Rain on the east side drains toward Clear Creek, Crooked Creek and Goose Creek, which feed the Rocky River and eventually the Pee Dee. For a large lot near that ridge, slopes can fall away in more than one direction. We plan erosion control by slope face, using blankets where the grade is steep and hydromulch where it is gentle.

Pasture to lawn

Turning an old pasture into a lawn means dealing with uneven ground, compacted paths and tough perennial weeds. We usually knock down the existing growth, rough grade to fill ruts, add topsoil where the clay shows through and fine grade before seeding. A bonded fiber matrix mulch helps on long slopes where a heavy rain could cut rills.

Growth and new roads

Mint Hill's population rose 52.3 percent between 2000 and 2010, and I-485 passes along the east side of town. New subdivisions and the road work around them mean plenty of construction-site seeding, silt fence and inlet protection for builders.

An old place

Mint Hill was founded around 1750 by Scots-Irish settlers and is described as the first town created in Mecklenburg County. Some of the oldest farm ground in the county is here, and much of it has been worked hard over the years. Expect soil testing and lime to be part of the plan.

Mint Hill Questions

Is hydroseeding practical for two or three acres?

That is where it shines. One truck can cover large areas quickly, and the mulch protects the seed far better than straw spread by hand.

Can you turn my old horse pasture into lawn?

Yes. We clear the existing growth, fix ruts and low spots, add topsoil where needed and seed. Plan on a soil test first.

My lot slopes two ways. Does that change the erosion plan?

It can. We treat each slope face separately, with blankets on steeper faces and hydromulch on gentler ones.

Do you seed wooded lots after clearing?

Yes, once stumps and roots are dealt with and the surface is graded. Shady edges get a shade-tolerant mix.
