Grass on the River Side of Gaston County

Hydroseeding in Mount Holly means paying attention to water. The city sits just west of the Catawba River in northeastern Gaston County, at about 627 feet, lower than most of the surrounding towns. It is bounded by I-85 to the south and NC 16 to the north, with the river on the east side. Lower ground near a river tends to stay wetter longer, and that changes how and when we seed.

Wet soils near the water

Along Piedmont rivers, floodplain soils such as the Chewacla series are somewhat poorly drained and can hold a seasonal high water table 6 to 24 inches below the surface from November through April. Not every Mount Holly lot sits on soil like that, but the ones closest to the river and creeks often do. On those yards we avoid seeding into saturated ground, fix drainage first and choose a seed mix that tolerates wet feet.

Downstream of drinking water

Mountain Island Lake, just upriver, supplies drinking water for Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Mount Holly and Gastonia. Construction near the river or its feeder creeks calls for well-maintained silt fence and quick, permanent cover so soil does not wash toward that water supply.

Dutchman's Creek and old mill ground

Dutchman's Creek was the site of a 1754 land grant and an early mill operation. The Mount Holly Cotton Mill, started in 1875, is the oldest surviving mill in Gaston County. Older parts of town have small yards on long-settled ground, often with worn lawns that need renovation more than new installation.

Growth along the corridors

The city grew 29.6 percent between 2010 and 2020, to 17,703 people, helped by better regional roads. That brings new subdivisions and industrial and commercial pads, which need construction hydroseeding and sediment control.

Mount Holly Questions

My yard near the river stays wet all winter. When should we seed?

Wait until the ground has drained enough to grade without rutting. On wet sites that is often late spring, after fixing drainage.

Is there a grass that handles damp ground?

Some fescue blends tolerate moisture better than Bermuda. On very wet spots, drainage work comes first.

Why is silt fence such a big deal near Mount Holly?

Creeks here feed the Catawba near Mountain Island Lake, a drinking water source. Keeping sediment on site protects it.

Do you seed industrial and commercial pads?

Yes. Fencing and drain inlet barriers stay up while the pad is built, and the site gets permanent grass when the work wraps up.
